The Super Eagles of Nigeria have failed to qualify to participate in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations for the second successive time after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Egypt on Tuesday.

Nigeria had a chance to pick a qualification ticket going into Tuesday’s match, if they could win the match in Alexandria thanks to the withdrawal of Chad.

The Super Eagles however were outplayed by the Pharaohs at the Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria, Egypt as they had no shot on target on the night with the only clear chance for the Eagles a long range strike from West Ham player, Victor Moses.

The Egyptians threatened the Nigerian backline with their swift counter-attacking moves, nevertheless Carl Ikeme’s last minute replacement Daniel Akpeyi kept Nigeria in the game until a Ramadan Sobhy deflected goal in the 65th minute blew away Nigeria’s chance.

While Egypt return to the continental show-piece after missing out on 3 successive tournaments, Nigeria would need to wait till Cameroon 2019 to reach the Africa Cup of Nations.
