Youth Corp Member Provides Sanitary Pads in Bayelsa

By  |

So a Corp member went off her way to share her Nysc project in Bayelsa and it caught our attention. Nwakaudu Ugoeze, a Corp member serving in Bayelsa shared her personal project which dealt on young girls in the Niger Delta.

According to Ugoeze, with poverty creating havoc across the nation, menstruating girls lack sanitary pads and as a result do not attend school until the cycle is over.

This has increased absenteeism, and dropout affects the performance of the girl child. By providing sanitary pads the girl child concentrate and complete school with increased performance. The gender gap between boys and girls enrolment and retention in school will be reduced.

Since the female gender can not object to menstruation ,attention is therefore needed to help young students in getting sanitary pads. Researcher’s have confirmed that 81% of females students have had school disrupted due to menstruation in sub Saharan Africa.

Students need to learn how to practice safe and clean menstruation.

With help from well meaning individuals and friends I embarked on safe and clean menstruation sensitisation among secondary school girls and communities in Yenagoa local government area of Bayelsa state.

I have been able to sensitize over 500 young girls and have successfully distributed  over 200 Educational aid materials to students in kpansi community secondary school. I gave them a career talk on how to choose a career and differenciate between career and skills and how to aim at getting their career.
