Saraki’s Trial Continues Tuesday as CCT Refuse Adjournment till Friday (Details)

Justice Danladi Umar, Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal is proceeding with the trial of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, in spite of the fact that it will affect the sitting of the Senate.

Justice Umar dropped a jaw breaker on Monday morning, when he declared that the trial would take place on a daily basis between 10am to 6pm.

He adjourned the trial later in the day, while rejecting the request made by Saraki’s lawyer, Kanu Agabi (SAN), for the tribunal to adjourn the trial till Friday, April 22.

Agabi stated that Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday which are the days of the week which the Senate sits, and as such, the Senate President should be allowed to oversee legislative activities.

However, the lead prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Jacobs opposed the request, noting that the Senate should not be brought into the trial.

“The Senate is not on trial. The persons that is on trial is the defendant. The Senate should sit. It’s a disgrace to our nation to be saying that.”

Justice Umar responded by saying that the Senate should continuing siting while the Senate President is allowed to face his trial.

“The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is not on trial, the Senate should sit. The only thing is that the personality of the defendant who happened to be the Senate President. The Senate should continue to sit.”

Consequently, the false assets declaration trial of the Senate President was been adjourned till Tuesday.
