Justice Okon Abang of a Federal High Court in Abuja had yesterday insisted that the former ruling party put a stop to its planned national convention.

Justice Abang had stopped the convention pending the determination of an interlocutory application filed by factional leader of the PDP, Ali Modu-Sheriff.

Abang adjourned the hearing of the case till September 7, 2016, and also gave a stern warning to the Police and the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof Mahmood Yakubu, not to send monitors to the convention planned by the Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi-led national working committee.

Despite Justice Abang’s ruling, the party had insisted on the convention following a contrary order gotten by Senator Ben Obi by Justice Ibrahim Watila of the Port Harcourt Division of the Federal High Court, directing the IGP to monitor the convention.

Justice Watila premised his ruling on the fact that the National Caretaker Committee of the PDP remained the executive authority in all matters concerning the party.

In the meantime, the Sharks Stadium venue of the convention remains shut as delegates who arrived at the Garden City yesterday await further development.
