Champions league defending Champions Barcelona were knocked out of the Champions League after a brace from Antoine Griezmann gave Atletico Madrid a 2-0 quarterfinal, second leg win at the Vicente Calderon Wednesday night.

Griezmann stunned Barcelona fans after he headed home from Saul Niguez’s precise cross to give the home side a deserved lead in the 36th minute and Barca never really threatened a comeback from that point on.

The France forward went further to convert a late penalty with two minutes remaining following a handball from Andres Iniesta, to complete a 3-2 aggregate victory that eliminated Barca at the quarterfinal stage for the second time in three seasons.

The result ends Barca’s dream of becoming the first side to retain the Champions League, with a late-season slump threatening to derail the Catalan’s season following one win in their last five games.
