Fifa to Release New Seeds for Africa 2018 World Cup Qualifiers

Fifa, World football governing body has announced they will release new seeding for the 2018 World Cup qualification series (African zone) on June 21 following complaints from several of the teams.

Egypt, seven-time African champions are among the countries that have a grouse with the seeding which puts them in Pot 2 along with Nigeria.

The Egyptian FA made a formal complaint that they should be among the top seeds (Pot 1) going by their current Fifa ranking and other related indices.

Fifa in its response to the complaint through its deputy secretary general Marco Villiger, issued a memo to the 20 teams in the final rounds of the qualifiers stating that a new special seeding will be released on June 21, three days before the draw for the World Cup qualifiers.

The 20 teams will be drawn into five groups of four teams with the overall group winners picking the ticket for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The qualifiers are from October 2016 to November 2017.
