Commissioner of Police in Enugu gets Redeployed over Fulani Herdsmen

Nwodibo Ekechukwu, the commissioner of Police in Enugu has been redeployed by the Nigerian Police Force following his handling of the attack on Ukpabi Nimbo by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

The Punch is reporting that the Force Public Relations Officer, Bisi Kolawole, announced on Tuesday that Ekechukwu had been posted out of the state command to an unnamed state or role.

Ojukwu, the new state police commissioner, is a former Force PRO.

On Monday last week, no fewer than 20 persons in Ukpabi Nimbo, an agrarian community in the Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State, were killed while many other residents were injured during an attack by Fulani herdsmen.

It is believed that many in the higher echelons of the police force were angry Ekechukwu failed to act after the villagers  informed the state police command about the impending attack.

None of the cattle rearers assailants were arrested.

Yesterday, President Muhammadu Buhari reiterated that he had ordered heads of security agencies to take all necessary actions to curtail the activities of the herdsmen and arrest those still bent of causing havoc on communities in the country.

A statement on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, stated that Buhari repeated the order  while receiving members of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Monday evening.

“We are determined to secure all Nigerians and I have told the Inspector-General of Police and other security agencies, in very strong terms, to deal decisively with the attackers,” the President said.

Buhari expressed his personal condolences to the Catholic Bishop of Enugu, the people of Ukpabi Nimbo and all other communities that had been recently attacked by the herdsmen.
