Civil Society Groups Demand Amaechi’s probe, resignation

A number of Civil Society organizations are calling for the probe of Nigeria’s Minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi over allegations made by two justices of the Supreme Court that he attempted to bribe to pervert justice.

Adetokunbo Mumuni, Executive Director, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP),  said the allegations must be thoroughly investigated.

“Amaechi is having too many baggage, but let the appropriate agency (ies) start investigating the two sides. They should investigate what the judges have said and examine what Amaechi has said in defence. The truth will be somewhere in-between. The investigation must be thorough and unbiased” he said.

Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders’ Executive Chairman, Debo Adeniran urged the judges to come up with more evidences, while calling on the relevant agencies to begin investigations.

He said, “The judges should not think they can embarrass anybody by making allegations without evidence and they should not think they can disrupt the free flow of trial. But if Amaechi is found guilty of the allegations, he should be made to stand trial, just like the judges.”

One of the Judges, Justice Inyang Okoro had accused Amaechi of being involved in his arrest by the DSS because he refused to influence the decision of the apex court on the governorship election appeals of Abia, Akwa Ibom and Rivers States.

Another Justice, Ngwuta also alleged that Amaechi wanted him to remove the governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose.
