Neven Subotic could leave Borussia Dortmund for a cut-price fee in January, sources have told ESPN FC.

Subotic’s future at Dortmund has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks after finding himself out of favour under Thomas Tuchel and the defender has been linked with a move to Liverpool.

The 27-year-old, who was a cornerstone of the Dortmund side under previous manager Jurgen Klopp, has made just four appearances in all competitions since Tuchel’s arrival at the Westfalenstadion in the summer.

Subotic made a rare start against Wolfsburg earlier this month after both Mats Hummels and Sokratis Papastathopoulos were ruled out and the centre-back impressed as he helped Dortmund to a 2-1 win against the Champions League hopefuls.

However, he again found himself out of the side to face Eintracht Frankfurt the following week and was absent from the squad for last weekend’s defeat to Cologne due to illness.
a number of clubs across Europe are monitoring Subotic’s situation and could make a move for the defender when the transfer window reopens in January.

Despite signing a new deal in May to extend his stay at Dortmund until 2018, sources have told ESPN FC that Dortmund could be forced to let Subotic — one of the club’s top earners — go cheaply to get him off the wage bill given that he only on the fringes of the squad.

The Serbian earned a reputation as one of the best defenders in Europe after playing a key role in the Dortmund side that won back-to-back Bundesliga titles and reached the Champions League final in 2013
