University of Jos has yet again been stunned as yesterday night, armed men attacked the home of newly appointed Vice Chancellor of Unijos, Prof Sebastian Sidi Maimako, shooting dead a security guard and injuring two others.

According to eye witnesses, the private security guard died on the spot after receiving a bullet in the chest, while his colleague was taken away by the unidentified gunmen who also disarmed the injured police officer.

Stephen Serki, a resident of Angwan Rukuba who witnessed the incident, had this to say.

“A policeman was shot at the leg and his gun was taken away by the attackers. Two other security men of the university attached to the Vice Chancellor were also shot, one on the head, another on his chest; the one that was shot in the chest died on the spot, but another survived.”

The attack on the newly appointed VC occurred at the Private resident of Prof Maimako at the Etobaba area of Jos while the motive for the attack is yet to be ascertained.

Prof Maimako, 54, assumed duty as vice chancellor of the second-generation institution in June, succeeding Prof Hayward Babale Mafuwai in rather unique circumstances as a section of the senate reportedly did not partake in the election process that had 26 professors contesting.

Sources have disclosed that the vice chancellor was out of the country at the time of the attack, although the Unijos press is yet to release an official statement regarding the unsettling development.
