Truck driver crushes Conductor to Death (Details)

A truck driver, Suraju Adeyemi has been arrested by men of the Nigerian police in the Alakuko area of Lagos state, after the truck he was driving killed a bus conductor.

A report by PUNCH says that the deceased had hung onto the body of the truck without the knowledge of the truck driver and when the driver was about to make a U-turn, the conductor reportedly fell on the ground and was crushed by the vehicle’s tyres. The victim is said to have died on the spot and his remains have since been deposited at the Onipanu General Hospital, in Ota, Ogun State.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmos, who confirmed the death, said policemen from the Ikotun division towed the vehicle to their station.

“There was a fatal accident at the Ayedun Field, along AIT Road, Alagbado, at about 2.30pm on Saturday. It was the truck driver that reported himself to the police after the incident” she said.

SP Dolapo Badmos also added that investigations into the incident were ongoing.

It is commonplace in Lagos for Bus Conductors to hang on the tail of their busses. Though the practice is illegal, and police try to deter them by making arrests, it still persists. As unfortunate as this accident is, it is hoped that the fact that a truck killed a bus conductor would serve as a reminder of the inherent dangers in the practice.
