Tinubu demands Oyegun’s resignation

The All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has called for party chairman, Chief John Odigie Oyegun’s resignation over his conduct in the aftermath of the party’s recent primary election in Ondo state.

Power brokers in the APC over the last two weeks have unsuccessfully made efforts to resolve the differences between the two party leaders over the choice of the party’s flag-bearer at the forthcoming Ondo state governorship election.

Segun Abraham, rumoured to b e Tinubu’s candidate lost to senior lawyer, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN).

Although at first it seemed Tinubu was comfortable with Akeredolu’s emergence, an explosive piece on Sunday titled “Oyegun’s Ondo fraud: The violation of democracy in the APC,” cleared the air there are unresolved issues.

Tinubu accused APC national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun of acting against the resolution of the party’s national working committee concerning the Ondo APC governorship primary election outcome and therefore called for Oyegun’s resignation in his piece.

“Contravening the NWC decision and in violation of all rules of fundamental decency, Oyegun decided to safeguard the fraud done in Ondo by perpetrating a greater fraud. Oyegun arrogated to himself the right to submit the name of Rotimi Akeredolu to INEC as the candidate of the party,” Tinubu said.

On Sunday, Tinubu described Oyegun’s action as an irremediable act of subversion of the will of the party and an attack on democracy.

Tinubu said: “To rescue the party, Oyegun must go. He has shown that he and democratic fair play cannot exist in the same party at the same time; the choice has already been made. For those who care about the party, who care about Nigeria and its chance for a better tomorrow, now is the time to stand against this brewing evil before it grows to encompass all we have built and all we hold dear.”

It is the first time Tinubu has openly attacked a chieftain of a party he played a dominant role in building, and his call for Oyegun’s resignation is sure to lead to widen the divisions within the party.
