THE UNCLEAR NIGERIAN PARTY SYSTEM

I wanted to start to writing this piece yesterday around 11:am but ID(investigation Discovery) stole my attention and I ended up rescheduling it for this morning, but I woke up to the senate president & IGP’s altercate which also distracted me from writing ?. At exactly 5:30pm today, I conquered procrastination and opened my note pad, and here we are ?.

I saw my peer group celebrating turncoats this morning, I was sad. These people aren’t switching political organizations because they want a better Nigeria but obviously for their personal interests, so why are we commending them? Bigotry, ignorance, partisanship among others, if you ask me. We need to figure how to kick them out not celebrate them, they make a mess of one and run to the other and vice versa.

A party system is said to be a concept that’s concerned with the system of government by political parties in a democratic state. There’s been a serious party system problem in Nigeria since beginning of the fourth republic because we don’t know if it’s a two or multiple party system Nigeria adheres to, although it is stated in the constitution that Nigeria runs a multi party system.

A multi party system is a system which allow multiple political parties to run for national election, and all have the capacity to gain control of government offices, separately or in coalition while a two party system is where two key political parties dominate the government.

A layman probably thinks Nigeria runs a two party system because of the dominance of two political parties which are APC ( All Progressive Congress) and PDP (Peoples Democratic Party) of recent.

The fourth republic began with three political parties (Peoples Democratic Party, All People Party and Alliance for Democracy), with time more parties became registered but have been unable to make a major impact. It’s always PDP against another political organization.

In fact it’s never been about more than a political organization (PDP) till the 2015 general elections where All progressives congress beat PDP in the presidential election. Prior to this PDP controlled huge resources compared to other parties.

More than 50 political parties exist in Nigeria at the moment but if you ask a random person on the street to list ten, I’m certain the person can’t. These Two political parties have made the political atmosphere to favor them alone, monopolizing the whole political system in the country. The smaller political parties don’t have the resources and man power to match these two giants( Abayas ).

I think the whole political system needs a total reform so we can operate like a typical multi party state.

Guys, I had a lot to write to be honest but procrastination made me forget all my points, I was foolish enough not to write them down somewhere ?.
