Senate Summons Abubakar Malami over Saraki and Ekweremadu’s forgery case

The Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami is expected to appear in the Nigerian Senate after he was summoned today by the legislators over plans to prosecute the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, who were alleged to have forged the Senate Standing Order 2015.

The Senate President and his deputy were accused by a number of lawmakers of conspiring with national assembly officials to forge the senate rules. The lawmakers claimed that the subsisting law was the Senate Rules 2011 which was yet to be amended.

Premium Times reports that the senate took the decision following a motion moved by Senator Dino Melaye, the senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District.

Dino Melaye said “there is an impending threat to democracy” and that the executive arm of government plans to enthrone “one man rule”. He further stated that the senate wants the AGF to “explain and justify his action with evidence and why it does constitute gross abuse of his office”.

Six senators supported the motion.

Ekweremadu, who presided over the session, asked the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, to summon Malami, within 48 hours. It is expected that the attorney general will answer questions relating to the forgery allegation and the subsequent prosecution.
