‘Policeman’ Arrested after Stabbing Tout to Death over N100
The Lagos State Police command has arrested a policeman after he reportedly killed a motor park tout, Ahmed, on Saturday following an altercation over N100.
The altercation occurred at the popular Berger bus stop when the driver of a 14-seater bus headed for Ibadan refused to give one of Ahmed’s friends a N100 ticket fee.
The Policeman who was a passenger, reportedly got down in the middle of the altercation and stabbed the deceased, who had come to the scene to find out what the issue causing pandemonium in the area was.
An eyewitness at the scene recounted the incident to Punch.
“But the policeman suddenly brought out a very sharp knife and stabbed him (Ahmed) in the stomach. He held the policeman for a while and slumped. He stood up, staggered and slumped again.
“The policeman put on trousers usually worn by riot policemen,” he said.
The tout was rushed to Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre at the Ojota Tollgate, where he was confirmed dead on arrival. His friends rushed back to deal with the policeman but were prevented from doing so as men of the Rapid Response Squad at the bus stop released tear gas canisters to rescue the suspect. They however vandalised the 14-seater bus and threw stones at the RRS men as they drove away.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident but denied that the suspect was a policeman stating that he only posed as one.
“A group of social miscreants allegedly engaged one Sulaiman Anafi, a driver in charge of a Mazda commercial bus with number plate, XB 251 LEM, in a brawl at the Berger bus stop, inward Lagos, over parking ticket.
“In the process, one of the passengers in the bus reportedly stabbed one of the area boys in the area with a knife and he died on the way to a nearby hospital.
“The suspect has been arrested. He is not a policeman.”
