Next Man Utd Manager Odds: Zidane, Pochettino.. Here Are The Favourites To Replace Sacked Jose Mourinho
Zinedine Zidane, Laurent Blac and Mauricio Pochettino are among favourites to replace Jose Mourinho who was sacked after Manchester United Sunday’s defeat to Liverpool – which left them languishing 11 points off the top four.
A statement from United on Tuesday morning said:
“The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.
“A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.”
Zidane, who won the Champions League in three successive seasons as Real Madrid manager before departing in the summer, is the front-runner, with Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino also in the frame.
BBC’s Ian Dennis reckons Zidane is the only realistic option for United if they were to appoint a new full-time manager at this point in the season.
“There’s only one person who springs to mind. You’re looking at someone who is currently out of work. And that would be Zinedine Zidane,” Dennis said on 5Live.
“However, that is pure speculation. I honestly thought Manchester United – and you can forget top four, Mourinho wanted to be in the top four by the end of the year. They won’t be in the top four by the end of the season. That’s how badly they’re floundering in the Premier League.
“And maybe how badly they performed at Anfield on Sunday was the final straw.
“But I thought that whilst they were in Europe he still had a chance of retaining his job. As soon as they went out of Europe — and that may be in the last-16 given yesterday’s opponents are PSG — then I thought he may well be extremely vulnerable.
“But apart from Zidane I cannot think of anyone else who is currently available who would suit Manchester United.
“Long-term I’ve always felt Mauricio Pochettino is someone who suits the ethos of Manchester United. He plays entertaining football, works with the players. He invests in youth.
“Tottenham fans will be gong mad at that. However, I don’t think they’ve got a chance of taking Mauricio Pochettino out of Tottenham mid-season.”
Ryan Giggs was Louis van Gaal’s assistant at United until Mourinho took charge.
But Dennis doubts the Wales manager would get the role.
“Giggs is with the Welsh national side. So that would take time to get out of that situation,” he added.
“But enough is enough with Manchester United. Otherwise they wouldn’t have made this decision.”
