Man who named Dog Buhari regains Freedom

Joachim Chinakwe Iroko, the man who named his dog Buhari, has been released from prison having met the conditions for his bail.

Joe Chinakwe was arraigned in Ogun on a one-count charge of intention to cause breach of public peace having allegedly inscribed ‘Buhari’ on his pet dog.

The accused was brought before Bolaji Ojikutu of Sango-Otta Magistrate Court on Monday morning and was subsequently granted a N50,000 bail, after which he was kept in prison custody while his family sought funds for his release.

The family through a fundraising appeal embarked upon by human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong was able to raise about N90,000.

According to Vanguard, he finally got released Thursday afternoon upon meeting his bail conditions.

He has since returned to his residence in Sango-Otta, Ogun state where he was first arrested on August 14 after police received complaints from a neighbour, Halilu Umar, that he had named his dog ‘Buhari’ in an apparent attempt to ridicule his father, who goes by the name ‘Alhaji Buhari’.

It became a topical issue across the country, sparking debate about basic freedoms in our present democracy.
