Nigerians React to #SaveMayowa Supposed Scam #SaveMayowa Scam Raised over $100,000The Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) has through its management said it will not release Mayowa for treatment elsewhere, until her family signs a consent form.

The hospital’s Public Relations Officer of LUTH, Mr. Kenneth Otuneme, said that he had yet to see Mayowa’s family since Friday in a chat with Punch . He said:

“Mayowa is still with us.  If the family needs a referral letter, the managing consultant would decide on that. If the managing consultant wants to issue a referral letter, he will. It is up to the family. I don’t know if the hospital plans to release Mayowa.

“As of Friday, I have not seen Mayowa Ahmed’s family. However, we won’t stop any family who wants to take their patient away; all they need to do is to sign a consent form. If a patient’s condition is critical and the family members decide to sign the consent form, stating that they no longer require her to be treated at LUTH, we will release the patient. This is the normal practice anywhere in the world.”

The family has been embroiled in controversy after Toyin Aimakhu accused the family of scamming Nigerians. The news caused massive outrage, with people divided in their support for the family. However, yesterday, the actress apologised and explained that she made the allegations because Aramide Kasumu of Life State Foundation told her the campaign was a fraud. Aimakhu didn’t question Aramide’s interest or make private investigations; the actress alerted the police instead. You can read that statement here.

The family had stated they would fly their loved one to Abu Dhabi for treatment, but according to the hospital’s relations officer, they are yet to sign the consent the form.

But it is worthy to note that the Lagos State police, which had been involved in the case,  said the command placed a red alert on the Access bank account opened in the name of Mayowa which has since been frozen while efforts are ongoing to contact the managers of the Gofundme online account so as to ensure funds raised through that platform is not fraudulently diverted.

Speaking with Punch on how far they had gone with the investigation, the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmus, said the “outcome of the police investigations, would be made available when necessary.’’
