In honor of World Food Day, Jos Foodies Club feeds over 1000 inmates

In keeping with the theme of the United Nations World Food Day in 2023, “Water is life; water is food; leave no one behind,” the Jos Foodies Club expanded its outreach to feed over 1000 convicts of the Plateau State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

Jos Foodies Club, which was founded in 2018, is the largest online food community in Northern Nigeria. Currently, the food club has over 75,000 members spread over Plateau State’s 17 local government areas.

The United Nations World Food Day is celebrated on October 16th each year, however owing to their hectic schedules throughout the week, the Jos Foodies Club picked Saturday, October 14th, 2023, to visit inmates at the Nigerian correctional service in Jos.

It’s incredible that the Jos Foodies Club, comprised of around 50 members, visited the correctional facility and prepared tasty jollof rice, spaghetti bolognese, Macaroni bolognese, and shawarma for the convicts.

Mr Dickson Nanfwang, also known as DJ Shawarma, the convener of the Jos Foodies Club, expressed thanks to the staff members of the Nigeria Correctional Services (NCS) Plateau State command for allowing them to carry out this noble work.

He stated that; when we interact with the prisoners, we spend at least 4 hours with them. We got to hear some of their stories, most of the stories are pathetic.

“There is a need to look into the correctional system because there are a lot of innocent people that are awaiting trial for as long as 10-15 years before it will be determined if they are guilty or not, and imagine wasting 10-15 years of your life here at the correctional center,” he added.

Mr. Nanfwang also used the opportunity to appreciate the entire club for their immense contribution in one way or another to making the United Nations World Food Day a success. We are pleased to announce to you that we fed at least 1,500 inmates in line with this year’s theme.

Furthermore, Mr. Nanfwang disclosed that the Jos Foodies Club will not wait for another World Food Day to visit the inmates. Based on the relationship established with the prison authorities, we will use food as an avenue to come in and train, teach, interact, encourage, and counsel the inmates.
