Heartland fans beat up FC Ifeanyi Ubah Players, Coaches and fans

Football hooliganism has emerged in the keenly contested Nigerian Premier League as players, coaches and fans of FC Ifeanyi Ubah were Saturday evening, allegedly attacked by irate fans of Heartland FC after both clubs played out a goalless draw in Owerri, the Imo state capital.

FC Ifeanyi Ubah players and fans were said to be navigating their way out of the Dan Anyiam stadium, Home to Owerri Warriors after the keenly contested NPFL clash. Suddenly, the irate Heartland’s fans began hurling stones and bottles at the team’s bus.

The enraged fans then pounced upon the Ifeanyi Ubah contingent as they attempted to flee for safety on foot, and gave them the beating of their lives. The lucky ones were whisked to safety.

Vanguard reports that FC Ifeanyi Ubah’s team buses were destroyed as the windows were smashed and the tyres punctured to restrain movement of the vehicles and ensnare the guests.

“I have never seen anything like this before. The level of hooliganism and thuggery shown by these people was beyond belief. Can you imagine that they were hurling stones at the girls? Young girls who just came to support their team. It was so sad to see,” an eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, said.

In the aftermath of the mayhem, about 30 people were said to have been rushed to different hospitals in Owerri for urgent medical attention, with several others unaccounted for.
