Ekiti State House of Assembly issue Warrant for Kayode Fayemi’s Arrest

The Ekiti State House of Assembly has on Tuesday issued a warrant of arrest on the immediate past governor of the state, Dr Kayode Fayemi.

The State’s assembly at its sitting on Tuesday, resolved that the Inspector-General of Police, the Commissioner of Police and other security agents should ensure the appearance of former Governor Kayode Fayemi before the House “in accordance with Section 129 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Tribune writes.

The Minister of Solid Minerals Fayemi, had served as governor of the state from 2011 to 2015 before his current appointment.

He has been accused by the government of Ayodele Fayose of embezzling state funds to the tune of N40bn.

During plenary, majority of the members at the sitting had argued in favour of the issuance of the warrant following their claims that he had refused to honour three invitations sent to him in the past.

According to the lawmakers, the invitations were to give him “an opportunity to come a defend himself against the various allegations.” They explained that “we are hereby compelled to exercise the powers given to the house of assembly by the constitution by issuing a warrant of his arrest.”

The Ekiti state branch of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who earlier lampooned the threats to arrest Fayemi as a joke, has yet to react to the development.
