EFCC hunt for Notorious Female ATM Thief for Allegedly Stealing N3m

OleThe Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched a nationwide manhunt for a woman identified as Tofunmi Akinade, who is alleged to be a serial Automated Teller Machine fraudster and identity thief.

According to information shared on the EFCC’s official Facebook page, the suspect recently stole the ATM card of a woman and stole over N1m from the account.

The suspect usually robbed unsuspecting victims by standing near ATMs under the guise of helping old or physically-challenged people to withdraw money only to swap their ATM cards and convert them to her own use.

Tofunmi reportedly operated late in the night when all bank transactions had closed and preferably at weekends when her prospective victims might not be able to alert the banks to their missing ATM cards.

The EFCC also stated that the suspect’s duty post was not only ATM points but also Point of Sales (POS) machines across the country.  “In her last operation, within 24 hours, this fraudster who operates with the identity of her victims succeeded in raking in about N3m” they stated. Her last victim had been a handicapped woman whom she offered to help withdraw money at an ATM in  Ibadan, Oyo State. After getting the woman’s pin and helping her with the intended withdrawal of N20,000, she swapped the woman’s ATM card and gave her a fake one. The unsuspecting woman left the ATM point oblivious of the swap until around midnight when the suspect began to withdraw money from her account.

The EFCC added that Tofunmi stole the identity and account details of an unsuspecting okada man that same day and used it to lodge in a hotel. She later fled to Ilorin after trying to conduct a transaction with the Okada man’s account at the hotel.

The okada rider has since been arrested and was helping detectives with investigation.
