Court Rules Increase in Electricity Tariff Illegal, Orders Reversal

By  |

light-bulb-599x300A federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos on Wednesday declared the 45 per cent tariff increase by the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) is illegal and has directed the agency to reverse the tariff immediately.

Premium Times reports that the order ruled that the hike by the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) is a violation of its interim order and subsequently awarded a cost of N50,000 against NERC.

The Nigeria Labour Congress which has opposed the price hike described the ruling as “courageous and deserving of commendation”.

“We also consider it victory for the ordinary Nigerian who has been crushed by exploitative bills,” a statement by the NLC’s president, Ayuba Wabba, said.

The labour congress urged NERC and the DISCOs to obey the judgement and revert to the old rates without further delay.
