The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has broken into factions with one identified as The Re-branded Indigenous People of Biafra (TRIPOB) leaving the group currently in two factions.

The Vanguard reports that TRIPOB decided to leave the main group as a result of the ‘inflexible and defeatist position of IPOB’ under the leadership of Nnamdi Kanu, who is presently in detention.

Chima Phillip Effiong Osuji, who released a statement on behalf of the splinter faction TRIPOB stated that the decision to break away was taken on Monday at an emergency meeting convened by some disaffected members of IPOB in Abia state. He stated that the rigid and fatalistic position of Nnamdi Kanu was the basis of their decision to breakaway.

Chima Phillip Effiong Osuji stated that it now sees the Biafra question from a different perspective and it has accepted the fact that the Biafra Republic is not a reality but an anachronism.

Biafra will now become to us a powerful metaphor for change, development and greatness of the Igbos inside a united Nigeria, where the South East axis will be a utopia from the sheer determination borne out of the Biafra metaphor.”

They also added that they doubt the south-south region will ever become a part of a Biafra Republic, except by force after a declaration of another civil war.

We believe in being a part of a united Nigeria, and a new way of thinking, where the victim mentality will no longer be acceptable,” the new group asserted.

TRIPOB has declared that it will publicly denounce the Biafra Republic at the Eagle Square, Abuja. The event will reportedly include recitation of the pledge to Nigeria and singing of the national anthem. This will be followed by a solemn burning of the Biafra flag and unveiling of a new Biafra flag, “representing pride, change, potential and spirit of the Igbo race which can thrive anywhere in the world.”
