Aston Villa secure promotion to the English Premier League

By  |

Aston Villa have secured promotion to the Premier League as they defeated Derby County by two goals to one. The win saw them win the Championship play-off final at Wembley.

This means they have secure an estimated 170 million pounds (77.6 Billion naira) which could come as television rights in the premier league next season.

The Birmingham based side, beaten by Fulham in last season’s final, seemed to be cruising to victory when John McGinn added to Anwar El Ghazi’s first-half strike to put them 2-0 up with 30 minutes to go.

However, Villa boss Frank Lampard took the bull by the horn and set his side up for a frenzied finale when substitute Jack Marriott’s effort from eight yards took a deflection on its way into the net.

Despite seven minutes of injury time, Derby County could not force an equaliser and now face another season in the second tier.
Aston Villa are set to return to the Premier League for the first time since relegation in 2016.

Promotion at Wembley caps a remarkable three months for Villa who had looked out of the promotion race before a club-record 10-match winning run saw them finish fifth.

Victory at the national stadium brings a successful end to what has been a rough year for ‘the rams’.

This will mean a return to Premier league football for Frank Lampard albeit as a coach.
