Ali Modu Sheriff’s Faction Of PDP Defect To Mega Party

By  |

The crisis hitting the Peoples Democratic Party PDP is far from over as the southwest faction of the party whose members are loyal to Senator Ali Modu Sheriff have defected to the newly formed Mega Party of Nigeria (MPN).

The defecting group in a statement said their action was necessitated by ‘inflammatory statements’ of Ekiti state governor, Ayodele Fayose and removal of the names of some of the leaders of the party in the region at the Abuja meeting held Monday and Tuesday, Daily Trust writes.

While speaking to journalists at the regional secretariat of the party in Ibadan on Tuesday, the Southwest chairman of the group and former chairman of PDP in Ondo State, Hon. Ebenezer Alabi had mentioned that the Southwest PDP are resolute to leave the party for governor Fayose and his cohorts.

This is the latest bump in a rocky period for the PDP after the Supreme Court a fortnight ago brought an end to the long-running leadership tussle that threatened to rip the former ruling party apart.

The apex court ruled in favour of Senator Ahmed Makarfi as the authentic National Chairman of the party, destroying the board of factional leader Modu-Sheriff.

There have been calls in certain quarters for punitive measures to be meted out to party members loyal to Sheriff, which may have informed the latest mass defection.
