CAF to Support Sheikh Salman for FIFA President
The African football governing body though expected to have supported South African businessman Tokyo Sexwale, it has turned its back on her only candidate in the five-man field race.
The announcement was made by CAF vice presidents Suketu Patel and Almamy Kabele Camara at a news conference following an executive committee meeting at the ongoing African Nations Championships (CHAN 2016) in Kigali, Rwanda, yesterday, Friday.
The decision to back the Asian football confederation boss gives a major boost to the Bahraini royal’s hopes of succeeding Blatter as the head of the scandal-ridden Zurich-based body.
With the withdrawal of Uefa chief Michel Platini from the race following an eight-year ban, Salman and UEFA secretary general Gianni Infantino are seen as the front-runners in the February 26 election by FIFA’s 209 member countries.
