EFCC Nab Top Military officer in charge of ‘Arms Purchase’

Following the ongoing probe into the alleged diversion of $2.1 billion arms fund from the office of the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki and the Dasukigate saga that has followed, a top military officer has purportedly been detained.

According to reports by the Nation, the detained military officer was a technical aide to former National Security Advisers (NSA), late Gen. Owoye Azazi and Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd.).

Dasuki is the principal character in the investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission into the fraudulent diversion of arms procurement funds.

The detention of the officer (whose rank was unspecified) is said to be causing ripples among military chiefs who had involvement in the purchase of arms.

The top military officer, who was recently detained, is believed to have been in charge of the arms purchased during the tenure of Azazi and Dasuki.

A source was quoted to have said: “The military officer was picked up in connection with the purchase of the arms because he was in charge of inventory and how each unit of the Armed Forces got its equipment.

“The EFCC has invited the officer to verify the arms purchase and the delivery status.

“This same officer related with many former and serving chiefs. There is no way he can be questioned without involving some of these officers in the military hierarchy.

“The arms scandal is messy and many ranking officers were involved. This is causing anxiety in the military because if the detained officer opens up, the probe will lead to more revelations.”

“These anxious military officers and associates have had limited contact with the top chief in detention facility.”

“The latest dimension of the investigation shows that heads may roll in the military over these arms deals.”

“The investigation is at the behest of the President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces. This mandate empowers the EFCC to question any public or military officer.”
