18 Dead as Flood Hits 19 LGAs in Jigawa
18 people are reported to have been killed in a flood that also destroyed over 6,637 houses in 19 local governments in Jigawa State.
The Punch reports that the tragic news was confirmed during a press briefing today by the Executive Secretary, Alhaji Yusif Sani, of the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency.
Sani stated that the tragic incidents happened during this year’s rainy season, and that the people who died are from the Gwaram, Dutse, Jahun, Gumel and Ringim local government areas of the state.
Here’s the summary of the disasters:
“The flood destroyed 141 houses in Dutse; 419 in Jahun; 525 in Hadejia, 417 in Babura; 525 in Ringim; 822 in Gumel; 529 in Malammadori and 126 in Birninkudu Local Government Areas.
“The disaster also claimed 68 houses in Taura; 120 in Kazaure; 691 in Maigatari; 336 in Gagarawa; 67 in Buji; 96 in Kirikasamma; 101 in Garki; 856 in Kiyawa; 87 in Kafinhausa; 57 in Gwaram and 54 in Suletankarkar local government areas.”
Sani further explained that some of the victims died when houses collapsed, however about three people sustained injuries in those cases.
He added that the Jigawa state government has provided cash to some of the victims.
